Welcome to PACS!

What is PACS?
PACS (Pan Asia Co-operation Society) is a Swedish NGO, founded in 1971 and involved in developmental programs in Asia aiming at fighting poverty and enforcing basic rights in accordance with the UN Charter. We do so through supporting education programs, female co-operatives/gender issues, health care programs and organisational development and strengthening the civil society in collaboration with our recognised partners.
In Pakistan:
Pak-SwedishTeachersAssociation,
Pak-Swedish Women Forum
Pak-Swedish Welfare Association.
In India:
Ankur: Society for Alternative in Education, New Delhi; SARV: Education for All, U.P and SARUS in Haryana.

Our programs are financed by donations and contributions from schools and individuals, selling of products from female co-operatives in our shops in Sweden and contribution from Swedish International Development Authority, SIDA. In Sweden our work is carried out on a voluntary basis, therefore all contributions are transferred directly to the programs in Asia.

What is PACS doing today?

# PACS is today (Sep. 2005) proving education to over 20 000 children in 470 schools, 50% of the students are girls/women.
# PACS is providing free school lunch to 8 000 students
# PACS is supporting a health care program and providing reproductive health services and preventive medicine( vaccination and family planning ) to 40 000 people
# PACS has introduced computer education in over 50 schools for poor children
# PACS is supporting a gender unit and 12 female co-operative centres where 120 women earn their own income.
(The production from these centres is sold in our shops in Sweden. The surplus from this sale - in 2004; 2 million SEK- goes directly to support our programmes in India and Pakistan.)

From our 30 years experience of developmental programs in Asia PACS has realised that the causes of poverty are inter connected - therefore the approach for change and reduction of poverty must also be integrated. PACS is carrying out a comprehensive Development Program for Poverty Reduction with the following components:

# Schools with free school-lunch and computer education in order to provide every child with a good education that will make a difference

# Adult education in order to increase adult literacy

# Health care and reproductive health services (family planning and vaccination) in order to reduce infant, child and maternal mortality and population growth

# A gender unit - in order to eliminate gender disparity in education - and female co-operatives for income generating activities.

# The program has a budget of SEK 14 million. SIDA is contributing SEK 12 million and PACS is providing SEK 2 million from our own resources.
